San Cristobal de La Laguna

San Cristobal de La Laguna, popularly known as La Laguna is a municipality city belonging to the Canary province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife This city was capital of the island of Tenerife and the San Cristobal de La LagunaCanaries in the past, but now the capital is Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It is located on the northeast of the island, next to Santa Cruz de Tenerife (who forms the largest metropolitan area in the Canary Islands, with a surface area of 366.85 kilometers).

The city was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 1999. It is the third most populous city of the Canary Islands after Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. There is the Canary Islands Advisory Council, the Diocese of Tenerife (dioceses of the province) and the first university in the Canaries. Laguna has always been regarded as the intellectual center of the Canary Islands.

The city is also known as “The City of Advance.” The city hosted over three centuries, the captaincy general of the Canaries (and therefore the de facto capital of the Canary Islands).

The town of La Laguna is located northeast on the island of Tenerife in the Valley Aguer between Anaga Massif and Mount Hope. Although the town is not the largest on the island, it is the most diverse. In a wide valley surrounded by mountains, lies the city of San Cristobal de La Laguna with a belt of neighborhoods, among them The Verdell, El Timple, Barrio Nuevo, Santa Maria de Gracia, El Coromoto, San Benito, San Lazaro and bronze.

To the south, between the city and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, is the area which has seen the most economic and urban growth, La Cuesta and Taco, with its many neighborhoods. To the north is the coast and the region’s agricultural Tejina Valley Guerra and touristic Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo. To the west, is the residential and rural Guamasa and Ortigal. To the east, the town stretches along the Anaga massif and is dominated by the rural settlements of Las Mercedes, the Batan and Las Carboneras.
