After the First Republic was produced in 1927, under the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera, the provincial division of the Canary Islands in the current provinces was created by the Royal Decree.

This was caused by the struggle for political control, economic and Modern history Santa cruzadministrative matters by the elite island, resulting in this lawsuit called insular, whose cause was that the inhabitants of Gran Canaria (mainly their leaders) seemed unfair in the allocation of the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the latter being a town which had the third largest population and economy of the archipelago, after the city of San Cristobal de La Laguna and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, slightly ahead of Telde.

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria this decision was criticized.  This was because its population and economy were even superior to that of Santa Cruz and La Laguna put together, and that since the Conquest it was for centuries, the economic capital, political, military and religious capital of the islands.

Also, situated in this was the only government in the nation in the archipelago: the Bishop of the Canaries; the first Tribunal of the Holy Inquisition; the Real Audiencia de Canarias and the residence of the Captain General Canarias.

In 1936 the last Republican mayor (Republic II) from Santa Cruz de Tenerife: Don Jose Carlos Hernandez Schwartz was killed at the hands of the military person Francisco Franco Bahamonde.

On March 31, 2002 torrential rain fell for about two hours to affect the metropolitan area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and extending in a NE direction towards the area of San Andres.
