Vilaflor

Vilaflor is a municipality belonging to the Spanish province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

VilaflorIt is 1400 meters above sea level and it is the highest village in the Canary Islands (although the town Orotava is higher and contains the peak of Mount Teide).

It is the least populated of Tenerife (1851 population, INE 2008).

Its inhabitants are known as chasnero.  This is because the old name of the people of Vilaflor was “Chasna,” an Indian name. Vilaflor is the name from the recent contraction of “flower town”.  The area also has a lunar landscape and the spring of Fuente Alta, which is 1400 meters above sea level in a protected natural area.

In this town the first Canary Saint born was, Pedro de San Jose Betancur, better known as Brother Pedro, in 1626.
