Festivals in Tenerife

Pilgrimages
The most traditional and popular festivals in Tenerife are perhaps extended the pilgrimages. They are crowded with carriages or carts, tools and livestock in honor of the patron or patroness of the place. Often in these celebrations they mark the reunion of identity factors such as : folklore, dance, crafts, cuisine, indigenous sports, where you can watch most of the attendees dressed in different costumes.

Originally the holiday pilgrimages are the embodiment of the wealthiest classes of society gathered in veneration of the saints who attributed the good harvest, fertile land, abundant rainfall, relief from certain diseases and so on. Consequently, they gather to taste the foods and wines, and offer their goods and shared pleitesia.

These celebrations were gradually popularized and gave way to one of the most famous festivals of today. Among the major pilgrimages of the island include the pilgrimage of San Marcos in Tegueste, where the carts are furnished with products from the field (seeds, grains, flowers, etc.) San Isidro Labrador in Los Realejos, San Isidro Labrador and Santa Maria Head in the Orotava, San Benito Abad in La Laguna, San Roque in Garachico, St. Augustine and the Pilgrimage Arafo-Offering to the Virgin of Candelaria, held every August 14.

Another significant event of the feast of the Virgin of Candelaria is the “Walk to Candelaria,” held on the evening of August 14 to 15, in which the faithful make a pilgrimage on foot from various parts of the island, including other islands, to the Villa Mariana de Candelaria.

Carnival

Perhaps the greatest festival both national and international is the Carnaval Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Apart from the capital, the carnival is held in multiple locations in the north and south of the island but it is the first where it has greater scope. There are various competitions that are scheduled: murgas, comparsas, rondallas groups, etc and began what the island called a carnival in the street with large concentrations of carnavaleros in downtown Santa Cruz, which consisted of ten days of celebration.

Corpus Christi

Marked is the religious festival of Corpus Christi, which is usually the making of floral carpets in the streets. A special master may be included in the Orotava, where you can see a tapestry of considerable size up in the town square by volcanic soils of various shades.  From the Teide National Park, after the celebration it returns to respect the environment of the Park. The feast of Corpus Christi in La Orotava is declared of cultural interest.

Semana Santa

This is held in all municipalities but is probably in La Laguna, La Orotava and Los Realejos which acquires special significance. There are processions that take place during the Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.

Relocation of the Virgin of Candelaria

This takes place every seven years on the island and is the moving of the image of the Virgin of Candelaria, from Villa Mariana de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife alternating every seven years, between this city and San Cristobal de La Laguna (diocesan headquarters).
