Volcanic eruptions Tenerife

At least 5 recorded volcanic eruptions are worthy of mention.

The first was in 1492 in Boca Volcano Crab which was observed by Columbus, and the next one in 1704, which erupted simultaneously with Arafo volcano and Fasnia Siete Fuentes.

Volcanic eruptions TenerifeTwo years later, in 1706, was the largest eruption of a volcano in Trevejo. This yielded large quantities of lava that buried the city and port of Garachico then an important part of the island. The last eruption of the eighteenth century occurred in 1798 in Las Canadas Teide more specifically Chahorra. Finally in 1909 the volcano erupted in Chinyero in the municipality of Santiago del Teide.

Since then there are to date no further eruptions on the island. Not one of the volcanic eruptions caused any loss of life.

Recent History
There have been other visitors to the islands not intent on hostile intentions over the centuries like the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt ascended the peak of the Teide and remarked about the island beauty.

As early as 1890 there has been tourism on the island and Tenerife especially the northern cities of Puerto de la Cruz although Tenerife was first declared a tourist town by ministerial decree on 13 October 1955 and later Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

In March 1936, General Francisco Franco went to Tenerife for the Republican government as he was fearful of its military and political influence so far from the European centres of power.

The collision between two aircraft occurred on March 27, 1977 in Tenerife North airport on the North of the island and is ranked one of the highest numbers of accident fatalities in aviation history. The aircraft involved in the tragedy went to Gran Canaria, but had been diverted to Tenerife due to the explosion of a bomb allegedly left by the separatist terrorist group MPAIAC in the Gran Canaria airport.
